2022 Constitutional Speech Contest Information 

March 11-12, 2022 

Ephrata, WA


Student Eligibility 

      Must be a United States Citizen or lawful permanent resident

      Enrolled as a High School Student (Grades 9-12) or equivalent if home schooled

      Must be under 20 years of age on the date of the National Contest

      Must reside, or attend school, in Washington

Post/Sponsor Activities

Student must be sponsored by a Post, Auxiliary Unit, SAL Squadron or Riders Chapter.


Sponsoring organization must submit application with $150 sponsorship fee by January 31, 2022.


Sponsor must certify Contestant by February 15, 2022 (see website or ask District Chairman for help)


All competitions will be held at Ephrata High School in Ephrata, WA on March 11-12, 2022.

The four finalists will earn scholarships totaling $5,000 ($2,000/$1,500/$1,000/$500).

Student Activities 

Each contestant must research, write and memorize an 8 to 10 minute speech on the United States Constitution which is to be delivered without notes, props, lectern or amplification.

Each contestant will be required to deliver a 3 to 5 minute speech on one of 4 randomly picked assigned topics. The 4 topics can be found on our web site ( each contestant will be given 5 minutes to prepare for the assigned topic presentation.


All contestants must attend the contestant briefings at 8PM the evening prior to the contest (March 11th), or be disqualified.


Each contestant must be accompanied by a chaperone at least 21 years of age. Lodging for the contestant and chaperone will be arranged for and paid by the American Legion. Travel for the contestant will be reimbursed at a rate of 15 cents per mile from their home to the contest site and back.
